CHAPEL HILL – Education doesn’t happen just in lectures.
“Faculty connect in a more intimate way with students in terms of … how they learn differently today,” Interim Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz of UNC Chapel Hill says in the accompanying video.
As an example, Guskiewicz describes how Michael McFee, an award-winning poet and professor of English and Comparative Literature, randomly invites his students to lunch at Linda’s, a restaurant and pub on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.
“He’ll see them walking across campus and he’ll strike up a conversation with them and offers up what’s called ‘Linda’s Fellowship’ – which means on any Thursday afternoon, he’s buying lunch at Linda’s for them,” Guskiewicz says.
“And he sits and talks about their experience at Carolina, and I think there’s some expectation that they’re going to talk a little bit about poetry. And he tries to get them engaged in poetry.
“That’s an example of an amazing faculty member here.”
