There’s so much to hope for in 2020…. We hope that:
- The Governor and the NC General Assembly finally agree on a 2019-21 state budget.
- As part of that budget, retroactive raises are approved for K-12 teachers, community-college instructors (who are paid less on average than public school teachers) and public university faculty and staff.
- The state begins to address a $3 billion backlog in building repairs and renovations in the UNC System.
- The UNC Board of Governors selects a new President of the UNC System who has independence, integrity and stature.
- State legislators study how they appoint members of the UNC Board of Governors to see whether they can create a board that is more representative of the student body and the state as a whole.
- Searches for new chancellors at several UNC System schools – East Carolina, UNC Charlotte, Fayetteville State and the UNC School of the Arts – produce strong, effective leaders for those campuses.
- The state expands the NC Teaching Fellows program – and this time includes historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) among the participating institutions to help produce a more diverse corps of teachers in our public schools.
- In November, North Carolina voters make their support for public education – at all levels – loud and clear.

Guess staff getting “raises” aren’t important? And a raise that doesn’t keep up with inflation isn’t really a raise.
Barbara Griffin says
It is past time for these sensible accomplishments. Let the voters speak by ousting legislators unwilling to put the interests of this state and its citizens above their “special interests”.
